ARCHBISHOP GUSTAVO STATEMENT REGARDING MEXICO CITY EARTHQUAKE
Statement of Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, MSpS, concerning the Mexico City earthquake
I, and the people of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, offer our prayers and condolences to those in Mexico City who were effected by the devastating 7.1 earthquake which struck there yesterday afternoon. We here in Texas are still coping with the aftermath of the disastrous consequences of Hurricane Harvey, and we join in solidarity with our brothers and sisters south of the Rio Grande at this troubling time. It was less than two weeks ago that another earthquake occurred just off the coast and terribly impacted the Oaxaca region as well as parts of Guatemala. We know at this time that more than 200 people have died, and that number will surely rise. Many buildings are also unsafe, and the fear is palpable. The sorrow is immense, but we are united with the people of Mexico, our familia here and across the border, in their suffering. Just as the residents and government of Mexico pledged their support and assistance to us in our time of need, we do the same in union as one body of Christ, one people of God. The faith of the people of Mexico is strong. As she always does, may Our Lady of Guadalupe, our Mother, hear our prayers and give us comfort in our times of trial.
